About the author

Once upon a time, MANY years ago, I joined the Girl Scouts without telling my parents.  My secret held up for about two weeks until the troop leader called my mom.  After some level of punishment I’m sure the adults felt was appropriate, I was allowed to remain a member.

The following spring was my first camping trip.  I had a great time, including walking into a tree (some might refer to this as “a sudden arboreal stop,” although no bicycle was involved).  I proudly wore the rather large facial wound for weeks as proof of my adventure.

I still enjoy camping.  Unfortunately, the only other person in my life who shares that passion is my husband.  Siblings, cousins, friends?  With little exception, their idea of roughing it is to stay in less than a four-star hotel.  Tent is a dirty word one doesn’t use when discussing their vacation accommodations.

I have every one of them to thank for planting the seeds for this series of books.  If they can use these guides to visit national and state parks without compromising their sensibilities around outdoor excursions, I’m pretty sure you can, as well.  If not, please take it up with them.

For our honeymoon we spent three weeks in our tent, working our way from Yellowstone in Wyoming south to the Grand Canyon in Arizona. Our family and friends still think we were nuts. They’re the reason for Parks from the Parking Lot.
